Since we first received hands-on training at the Storz Medical headquarters in Switzerland in 2011 —by Storz Medical’s globally recognized team of shock wave pioneers—leaders in every Storz innovation for decades — we have remained deeply committed to advancing shockwave therapy across the Caribbean. What began as a small initiative has evolved into a region-wide effort led by a collaborative team of 9 certified technicians and over 100 expert clinicians (including doctors, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and physiatrists) working in seven countries. Understanding shockwave therapy isn’t just about memorizing protocols — it’s about applying them, refining them, and growing alongside the evolving technology. That’s exactly what our network does ev

ery day. Together, we continue to treat patients hands-on — not only to help them heal but to incorporate new transmitter heads and devices as they are released annually. This ensures we stay at the forefront of clinically effective practice and that our training reflects the most up-to-date knowledge and results in the field. Our team’s approach blends structured online education with intensive hands-on training, designed to ensure every new user becomes not just competent but confident — ideally surpassing even our own benchmarks. We encourage every clinician to think beyond textbook protocols, because the most effective treatments often require tailored, real-world solutions. Importantly, our regional network regularly collaborates on complex cases and unique clinical scenarios — such as adapting protocols for patients on dialysis or managing contraindications in sensitive populations. This shared insight helps us constantly refine our approach and support each other in delivering safe, effective care across a wide range of patient presentations. Some clinics may initially view other practices acquiring Storz shockwave systems as competition. In reality, the opposite is true. History — both globally and locally — shows that when a new Storz system arrives in a market, awareness rapidly grows among both patients and clinicians that shockwave therapy simply works. As patient outcomes improve, demand rises — and clinics still relying on less effective or outdated technologies are often left behind. Rather than fragmenting the field, the growth of Storz-equipped clinics actually builds a stronger standard of care and raises the level of clinical expertise through shared learning, case discussions, and participation in regional congresses. In fact, we’ve found that the more clinicians using SWT, the better the results and the faster the adoption curve — benefiting everyone, most importantly the patients. We believe in staying connected and growing together. We welcome your input and would genuinely appreciate any success stories or clinical insights you’d like to share. Our strength as a network lies in the power of numbers and ongoing collaboration — it’s how we all continue to learn, improve, and deliver the best possible outcomes for our patients. In the spirit of collaboration, below is a recent testimonial and clinical outcome, that highlights what is possible when advanced technology meets real-world experience. Warm regards, Ken Brown on behalf of the entire SWT Therapy Group team www.swtorthopaedics.com

Revolutionizing Alzheimer’s Treatment with Storz Medical Neurolith Therapy

February 27th, 2024 by

dimentia related non invasive treatnents

by Dr. Bruce Wallerstein MD.

SWT Therapy Group, Dominican Republic

Alzheimer’s disease and its related dementia like conditions destroys lives for the old and the young as well. Those who have it, the worst, though not always knowing they have it. For the younger people, those attempting to help them, physically, emotionally, and even financially, they suffer with it as well.

There has never been a cure. There have been attempts at ameliorative medications, but in reality, no substantive program or treatment has been successful, even marginally.

Since the late 70’s an into the early 80’s when the world started to take a medical notice of Alzheimer’s disease, not much has really been accomplished. Interestingly the disease was first diagnosed and recognized by Alois Alzheimer in 1908, who was a German psychiatrist. the first diagnosis was made on a woman who was 53 years old, relatively young, even by those years’ standards. But today it is destroying generations and the prediction is to increase 4 fold in the next 25 years. It is not going away, no vaccines are being produced nor are there other viable treatment options in the fold.

But now there is a new program rapidly expanding globally.   A new process and not from some startup company who has no experience in the medical field. No, this approach is from  Storz Medical from Switzerland who has been very much in evidence with sister companies since the mid 40’s . They are a giant in the creation and proliferation of countless different pieces of medical equipment which have revolutionized the field of physical therapeutics and various noninvasive treatments from lithotripsy to shoulder therapy to diabetic treatments to name a few.  The company’s expertise, research and design capabilities and extensive experience bring it to now look at a new application to work on an area which is overtaking a significant segment of the world’s population.

Covid has devastated Caribbean economies and families alike over the past two years. Medical clinics/hospitals in Caribbean countries cannot afford the NEUROLITH technology to successfully treat Alzheimer’s patients. .  Our plan is to donate the equipment to a clinic, and the train doctors (geriatricians or neurologists) at no cost to the clinic.

SWT Therapy is spearheading the fundraising efforts to give patients in the Caribbean suffering from Alzheimer’s access to this life-changing therapy.  In the event that insufficient funds are not raised to achieve objectives by our deadline of August 25, 2022, all funds will be donated to the Jamaican Alzheimer’s Association.

First, a clinic in Jamaica will service surrounding Caribbean countries. The next step is a mobile clinic to provide access to these life-redeeming treatments to an even wider area.

Storz Neurolith has developed a novel treatment for an old disease. They are transferring technology from their bone therapy programs to cerebral therapies and looking to ward off a disease process which we all fear in our futures.

The Common Question-Difference Between Radial and Focused Shock Waves

January 28th, 2024 by

T

Focused Shockwaves (Hard shock) – Smaller focal point for greater accuracy and greater treatment depth.

  • Deep reach up to 12cm dependent on the attachments used
  • Precise energy delivery to the exact area
  • Fast impulse
  • High energy density

Focused shockwaves are able to penetrate deeper into the tissues and provides all of its power at the designated depth. Focused shockwaves are generated electromagnetically through a cylindrical coil creating opposing magnetic fields when current is applied. This causes a submerged membrane to move and generate a pressure wave in the surrounding fluid medium. These propagate through the medium without any loss in energy with a small focal zone. At the site of actual wave generation the amount of energy dispersed is minimal. This limits damage at the skin and to underlying soft tissues.

The focusing mechanism directs each shock to a defined point within the body. The location within the body is adjusted by altering the energy output of the machine or by adjusting the focusing mechanism. A stand off applicator can be used to adapt the depth of energy. Treatments that require targeting tissue at a deeper level such as tissue close to bone, calcifications, or delayed unions and non unions benefit from focused shockwaves. Patients who are unable to tolerate radial treatments for acute injuries will also benefit from focused shockwave therapy.

Radial Pressure Wave / Shockwaves (Soft shock) – Larger treatment area of superficial indications

  • Superficial 3-4 cm treatment depth
  • Spreads to treat larger areas
  • Slow impulse
  • Low energy density

The radial shockwave comprises three parts – Ultrasonic pulse, audio acoustic pulse and the relatively slow shear wave.

Radial pressure waves have their greatest energy at its source and weakens the farther it travels. Radial waves are generated by means of a pneumatic system. Using compressed air, a projectile is accelerated to a high-speed then suddenly decelerated by a transmitter, which is held to the area being treated. The generated kinetic energy is than transmitted to the tissue from where it propagates outwards aspherically as a radial wave into the tissue. The transmitter surface constitutes the highest pressure and highest energy density.

The pressure waves lose power the deeper they enter the body. For treatments where the targeted tissue is superficial, radial pressure waves will give patients good results, such as plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow or the Achilles tendon. The Storz radial systems offer a wide range of transmitters, including fascia and spine applicators, which allows for both local treatments and the treatment of broad superficial areas. Muscle chains can be treated functionally in the course of the chain. Pressure waves mobilize the tissue layers, which in turn breaks up adhesions and trigger points. The shifting of the tissue layers brings about myofascial release, which is the prerequisite for fascia therapy.

What are the biological Effects of Focused Shockwave and Radial Pressure Waves?

Focused shock wave AND radial pressure waves:

  • Increase of cell wall permeability
  • Stimulation of Microcirculation (Blood, Lymph)
  • Release of Substance P Neurotransmitter responsible for pain modulation.
  • It is a powerful vasodilator, causing considerable hypotension

Focused shock waves ONLY:

  • Cavitation Release of nitric oxide (increased cell metabolism, neoangogenesis, anti-inflammatory effect)
  • Stimulation of growth factors

Focused shockwave indications

F-SW is used for the treatment of but not limited to:

  • Acute injuries in elite athletes
  • Knee & Joint arthritis
  • Bone and Stress Fractures
  • Shin Splints
  • Osteitis Pubis -Groin Pain
  • Insertional Achilles Pain
  • Tibialis Posterior Tendon Syndrome
  • Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome
  • Haglund’s Deformity
  • Peroneal Tendon
  • Tibbialis posterior ankle sprain
  • Tendinopathies and Enthesopathies
  • Urological indications (ED) Male Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction / Chronic Pelvic Pain / Peyronie’s
  • Delayed bone-non unions/bone healing
  • Wound Healing and other dermatological and aesthetic indications

Diagnostic imaging is sometimes used to exactly localize the point of energy concentration. The STORZ devices can be purchased with an Ultrasound diagnostic module (black/white or color). Alternatively continuous patient feedback is used during the treatment to locate the ‘pain’ spot.

Focused shockwave indications

In more recent years the use of both modalities on a patient has become the gold standard for many advanced shockwave providers; treating the superficial and shallower structures with radial pressure waves and then targeting the source of the injury with focused shockwaves. Those clinics who are combining radial and focused shockwave are seeing fantastic results.

“I have 2 clinics that use Shockwave, one has focused and radial devices and the other only radial. Despite the clinic with only radial being a multi disciplinary clinic treating elite professional athletes, including premier league footballers and having luxurious surroundings, I feel totally insufficient there because the focused device is at my other clinic. I know I can offer better treatments when having the focused device, it’s just not the same with only radial, I end up advising all the patients to go to the other clinic for better results no matter what part f the body. Focus can treat things that radial can’t and combined the two modalities are even better!”.

Despite these efforts, persistent pain at the origin of the deltoid remained, hindering T. Taylor’s ability to fully enjoy the sport.

A recent ultrasound revealed significant scar tissue and calcification, prompting the surgeon to consider cortisone and needling techniques. However, before proceeding, T. Taylor explored alternatives and discovered the groundbreaking Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT). After extensive research, the market leader, Storz, stood out, and a pivotal connection was made with Ken Brown, the highly knowledgeable principal at www.swtorthopaedics.com.

Ken provided T. Taylor with a custom-designed shock wave treatment program and continued to offer invaluable advice throughout the journey. Fast forward just two months, and the results are nothing short of astonishing – T. Taylor is now 99% pain-free! The despair of wondering if serving on the tennis court would ever be possible has transformed into a triumphant return to the game.

But the success story doesn’t end there. T. Taylor is now tackling acute hip flexor tendonitis with the same groundbreaking approach and is nearing a pain-free state. The elation felt is beyond words, and the credit goes to Shockwave Therapy and Ken Brown, whose tactful treatment protocol achieved remarkable results.
